After 30 years of age, increasing proportions of the relatively few pregnancies that do occur are aborted. Figure 4 shows-abortion ratios by number of prior live births for all women and for married women in England and Wales. Abortion ratios are very low for married women with no prior births or only one prior birth. With increasing parity the abortion ratio rises to a peak among women with four prior births, and declines beyond this point. The rise reflects a well-established pattern of family limitation.
