Man lives in a world utterly dependent upon Allah and open at Chapter 2: God, Man and the Universe • 29 every moment of time and point of space towards the Transcendent which is Allah. Islam emphasizes the extreme Transcendence of Allah who is beyond all that can be said of Him. Yet He is extremely close to man as in the famous verse, "We are nearer to him than his jugular vein," (L: 16) attests. Allah is even closer to us than ourselves. On the one hand He is utterly beyond and infinitely above us; on the other hand, He is at the center of our very being.

This would happen since no matter what man achieves in this world, there is always the certitude that these achievements will ultimately flounder and disappear. The greatest material achievements, not only of the individual but also of whole civilizations, can and in fact do wither away. It is only the eschatological realities which bring into focus the permanent, abiding and eternal consequences of human actions precisely because human beings are beings created for immortality and the eternal world.
